Tatonka Ska Trace Recreational Trailhead

Project Description
Located at the intersection of the Iowa Great Lakes Spine Trail and Tatanka Ska Trace in Spirit Lake, this trailhead facility includes restrooms, shaded areas, and a variety of trail-related amenities. The project features a dedicated parking lot, variety of seating options, bike racks, trails maps, drinking fountain, bike repair, and charging station. The facility is located in the heart of Spirit Lake – trail users can access over 40 miles of trail from this location.
Inspired by Native American beadwork patterns, Iowa’s native prairie landscape, and rail trails – the design creates an iconic gatherings place and variety of shaded / filtered shade spaces for trail users to enjoy. The project was built in collaboration with students at the Spirit Lake High School, and funded through a partnership of Imagine Iowa Great Lakes, Dickinson County Trails Board, Okoboji Foundation, and other generous donations from the community. The project was completed in the spring of 2022.
