ASPEN SEEMANN MEMORIAL PARK
Project Description
This community park project, located on Spirit Lake School campus, is designed for use by residents and visitors to the Iowa Great Lakes. The design centers around an inclusive playground with a variety of unique play pieces, varying textures, and accessible surfaces to create a play environment that accommodates all ages and abilities. Barrier-free components are intermixed with challenging play features to encourage parallel play by children with varying body sizes and mobility levels, together in the same space. This encourages the development of physical, social, and cognitive skills for children with and without disabilities – and makes clear the richness of cooperation and togetherness.
The first phase, began in 2023, featuring a new handicap accessible restroom building, accessible walking trails, shade structures and seating areas, parking lot improvements, a boulevard entrance, park signage, and native landscaping.
Future phases of the project will include additional shade structures and seating areas, expansion of the trail system, outdoor games (ping pong, corn hole, giant chess, shuffleboard), artificial turf mounds, and viewing terraces for high school sporting events. Total estimated construction cost is $7.3 million, with a first phase of approximately $4 million. The first phase is funded by a generous donation by the Dorothy B. Davis Foundation.
