A Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) is an official amendment used in floodplain management to establish a property’s location in relation to the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). The most commonly requested LOMA removes an existing structure from the SFHA to exempt the owner from paying flood insurance and to prove to a mortgage lender that the structure is at minimum risk of damage from a 100-year flood event. The second most commonly requested type of LOMA removes a portion of or the entire legally recorded property that lies above the SFHA, which is typically requested when an owner plans to build on the lot.
